An attractive town steeped in history that is a natural gateway to the diverse Zentralshweiz (central Switzerland) region all around. The array of sights, excursions, museums and activities makes this one of the densest, and most rewarding, areas of the country to explore.
There are plenty of bridges, yet the most famous is the Chapel Bridge from the 14th century. The north bank of the Reuss is home to the Old Town’s most atmospheric cluster of medieval houses structures with painted fronts. The city is small, however, became a centre of Swiss history and legend, and is the setting for the most memorable part of the William Tell legend.
The centre of Lucerne is a pedestrian area of cobbled streets bordered by houses, shops and hotels painted in medieval style or decorated with displays of flowers. Above the old town is the original city wall from which you can admire the splendour and variety of the scenery.
Old Town Lucerne with Mount Pilatus in background, Lucerne is ideally situated in the historic and scenic heart of what many believe to be the 'true' Switzerland - picture mountains, lakes, cowbells, alpine villages and meadows full of edelweiss.
